Purpose of the Scale

The purpose of the Acculturation Strategies Assessment Scale [ΚΑΣΕ] is to evaluate individuals’ acculturation strategies or psychosocial adaptation methods, such as those used by migrants adjusting to a new cultural environment.

Scale Description

The scale was developed by Papastylianou in 2000. It is based on Berry’s acculturation theory (1990). It includes four statements corresponding to the four possible acculturation strategies: integration, assimilation, separation, and marginalization. These strategies represent the approaches individuals use when they find themselves in a new cultural context. A person may use different strategies across different areas of daily life. The scale can be administered to both adolescents and adults.

Scoring and Statistical Analysis

Responses are scored using a five-point Likert scale, with each question rated from 1 to 5. A score of 1 corresponds to “strongly agree,” and a score of 5 to “strongly disagree.”

Validity and Reliability

The internal consistency coefficient (Cronbach’s α) ranges between 0.85 and 0.95, indicating high reliability.
