Purpose

The purpose of the test is to assess the reading ability of students in the early grades of primary school, and more specifically, to evaluate decoding skills, especially among first-grade students.

Description

The McLeod Phonic Test (MLPT-4) is an assessment tool designed to evaluate phonological decoding and early reading skills, particularly in primary school children. It focuses on the learner’s ability to recognize and decode words of varying phonological complexity.

Analysis

The test includes four subtests involving real words and pseudowords that differ in phonological and orthographic complexity. It examines the child’s ability to process simpler sound-letter combinations as well as more complex structures, such as consonant clusters and diphthongs.

Objective

The main objective of the MLPT-4 is the early identification of difficulties in reading and phonological decoding. Its results can help identify specific patterns of reading errors and support the planning of targeted educational interventions.

Scoring

The test is administered individually, and the student is asked to read a series of words. Correct and incorrect responses are recorded, together with different types of errors such as omissions, substitutions, additions, and sequencing errors. The results provide a more detailed profile of the learner’s reading performance.

Validity and Reliability

The MLPT has been used in educational assessment as a measure of reading and phonological skills. Its usefulness lies primarily in identifying decoding difficulties and monitoring the development of early reading abilities.
