Purpose

The WAIS-IVgr is the standardized Greek edition of the fourth version of the globally recognized intelligence scale for adults, WAIS-IV. It is designed to assess general intelligence in individuals aged 16 and older. The main objectives of its use include diagnostic evaluation of intellectual ability, enhancement of clinical utility, and strengthening of the scale’s psychometric reliability.

Brief Description

The WAIS-IVgr is based on Wechsler’s theoretical approach and evaluates the “individual’s global capacity to act purposefully, to think rationally, and to deal effectively with the environment.” It includes four index scores (Full Scale IQ, Perceptual Reasoning, Verbal Comprehension, Working Memory, and Processing Speed), derived from 10 core and 5 supplemental subtests—15 subtests in total. These subtests assess abilities such as vocabulary, digit span, symbol coding, spatial perception, and more.

Validity

The Greek edition of the scale is currently undergoing standardization with data collection from a nationally representative sample of adults aged 16–90. Clinical data are also being collected to ensure the construct and diagnostic validity of the scale for the Greek population.

Reliability

Although the reliability indices of the Greek version have not yet been published, the original (U.S.) version of the WAIS-IV demonstrates high reliability at both the index and subtest levels. Similarly high reliability levels are anticipated for the Greek standardization.

Data Analysis and Use

The scale is used for diagnostic, research, and educational purposes. Scores are derived using standard conversion norms from raw scores to scaled indices. It provides the ability to analyze cognitive profiles, assess functional capacities, and support differential diagnoses in populations with neurological or psychiatric disorders.
