Analysis
The ISOS is a tool designed to assess the frequency and intensity of an individual’s objectification by others in interpersonal relationships. Objectification refers to the tendency to view a person primarily as an object of sexual desire or performance, rather than as a whole individual with unique characteristics and emotional needs.
Purpose
The main goals of the ISOS are to:
Measure Sexual Objectification: Evaluate how often and in what ways a person is objectified in interpersonal relationships.
Examine Effects and Impact: Investigate the influence of objectification on self-esteem, mental health, and interpersonal relationships.
Detect Links with Other Attitudes and Behaviors: Explore the connection between objectification and other attitudes or behaviors, such as sexist behavior and social acceptance.
Support Interventions and Policies: Provide data that can be used to develop strategies and policies that reduce objectification and promote equality and respect.
Calibration
Calibration of the ISOS includes:
Categorization of Responses: Participants respond to questions related to objectification in interpersonal relationships using scales of agreement or disagreement (e.g., from strongly agree to strongly disagree).
Total Score: A total score is calculated that reflects the level of interpersonal sexual objectification.
Result Analysis: The relationship is examined between levels of objectification and other factors such as self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, and attitudes toward gender equality.
