Purpose
The purpose of the Montreal Battery of Evaluation of Amusia (MBEA) is to assess musical perception and diagnose amusia, whether congenital or acquired. By evaluating basic musical abilities, researchers aim to identify and record individuals’ capacity to perceive and process musical information.
Description
The Montreal Battery of Evaluation of Amusia is an adapted version for the Greek population. It includes tests that measure basic musical abilities, such as the perception of scale, melodic contour, interval, rhythm, meter, and musical memory.
Subtests
The Battery includes six subtests that examine different aspects of musical perception:
Scale Perception
Melodic Contour Perception
Interval Perception
Rhythm Perception
Meter Perception
Musical Memory
Function & Content
The battery uses 30 musical samples based on Greek scales and rhythms. Examinees are asked to compare the musical samples and identify similarities or differences between them. It also includes a musical memory task, where participants must recognize melodies they have previously heard. A short form for children is under development, which is expected to facilitate the assessment of musical perception in younger individuals.
Scoring Method
Scoring is based on the correct and incorrect answers given in each discrimination task. The analysis of results allows for the evaluation of the examinee’s musical abilities and the diagnosis of possible amusia.
