Description
The Singing Voice Handicap Index (SVHI) is a specialized psychometric instrument developed to assess the impact of voice disorders on the singing voice and on the daily functioning of individuals who use their voice for singing, either professionally or recreationally. Developed by Cohen and colleagues (2007) as an adaptation of the Voice Handicap Index (VHI), the SVHI focuses specifically on the unique vocal demands of singers and their perceptions of vocal health.
The instrument evaluates the functional, physical, and emotional consequences of vocal difficulties, providing clinicians and researchers with valuable information regarding voice-related limitations, vocal performance, and quality of life. The SVHI is widely used in otolaryngology, speech-language pathology, phoniatrics, voice therapy, music education, and clinical research involving singers.
Data Analysis
Data obtained from the SVHI are analyzed by calculating total and subscale scores, descriptive statistics, and psychometric properties. Statistical analyses commonly include assessment of internal consistency using Cronbach’s alpha, evaluation of construct validity through Exploratory (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), group comparisons, correlation analyses, and multivariate regression or Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to investigate the relationship between singing voice handicap, vocal health, quality of life, and clinical outcomes.
Objective
The primary objective of the Singing Voice Handicap Index (SVHI) is to provide a reliable and valid assessment of the perceived impact of voice disorders on singers’ vocal performance and everyday functioning. The instrument supports the identification of voice-related problems, the evaluation of treatment outcomes, and research on vocal health, vocal performance, and voice rehabilitation.
Scoring
The original SVHI consisted of 81 items, which were subsequently refined to a 36-item version organized into three subscales: Functional (10 items), Physical (10 items), and Emotional (16 items). Responses are recorded using a 5-point Likert scale ranging from 0 (Never) to 4 (Always), producing a total score between 0 and 144. Higher scores indicate greater perceived singing voice handicap and a higher likelihood of clinically significant voice impairment. A shortened 10-item version (SVHI-10) was also introduced in 2009.
