Youth At Risk Screening Questionnaire [YAR]

Description

The Youth At Risk Screening Questionnaire (YAR) is a 51-item screening instrument developed by Michael G. Conner (1989) to identify behavioral, emotional, social, and risk-related difficulties in young people.

Areas Assessed

The questionnaire includes items related to task completion and organization, impulsivity, peer relationships, school truancy, oppositional behavior, anger, emotional instability, irresponsibility, manipulation, aggression, substance-use concerns, and self-destructive behavior.

Purpose

The YAR is intended as a screening tool for identifying young people who may require closer assessment or intervention because of patterns of behavioral, emotional, family, social, or substance-related risk.

Structure

The instrument consists of 51 behavioral indicators, ranging from relatively common difficulties, such as poor organization or irritability, to more serious concerns such as physical aggression, drug-related problems, running away, cruelty, or threats of self-harm.
