Prosocial Involvement, Opportunities, and Rewards [PIOAR]

Description

The Prosocial Involvement, Opportunities, and Rewards (PIOAR) instrument, associated with the Seattle Social Development Project, assesses students’ perceptions of the opportunities and rewards available for prosocial involvement within the school environment.

Purpose

The instrument focuses on students’ perceptions of opportunities to participate in school activities, communicate with teachers, contribute to classroom decisions, and engage in extracurricular activities. It also assesses perceived rewards, such as teacher recognition, praise, and positive feedback.

It can be particularly useful in research examining school connectedness, protective factors, personal attitudes, and positive youth development.

Scoring and Data Analysis

The instrument is administered as a self-report measure. Responses are scored from 1 to 4, ranging from strong disagreement to strong agreement. Item scores are summed and divided by the total number of items, with higher scores indicating greater perceived opportunities and/or rewards for prosocial involvement at school.
