Description
The Pluralism and Diversity Attitude Assessment (PADAA-19) is an assessment instrument developed in 1996 by Stanley to evaluate individuals’ attitudes toward cultural diversity and cultural pluralism.
The scale examines how individuals perceive and respond to cultural diversity, including the extent to which they hold positive attitudes toward cultural pluralism and whether they experience comfort or discomfort in relation to diversity.
Objective
The primary objective of the PADAA-19 is to assess the degree to which respondents demonstrate positive attitudes toward cultural pluralism and feel comfortable with cultural diversity.
Through its different dimensions, the instrument provides a structured approach to understanding how individuals value and respond to culturally diverse environments.
Structure and Scoring
The PADAA consists of 19 items organized into four subscales. These subscales relate to the extent to which respondents value, appreciate, and apply cultural pluralism, as well as the degree of discomfort they may experience in relation to cultural diversity.
All items are rated on a 6-point Likert scale, ranging from 1 (Strongly Disagree) to 6 (Strongly Agree).
Scores obtained from the individual subscales are used to characterize different aspects of participants’ underlying attitudes toward cultural diversity and cultural pluralism.
Data Analysis and Use
PADAA-19 data can be analyzed at the subscale level to examine different dimensions of attitudes toward pluralism and diversity.
Statistical analysis may include descriptive statistics, comparisons between groups, and examination of associations between PADAA scores and other variables relevant to the objectives of a particular study.
Reliability analysis can also be conducted to examine the internal consistency of the overall instrument and its individual dimensions.
Reliability
According to the information reported for the PADAA-19, Cronbach’s alpha coefficients for the four factors range from 0.72 to 0.85, indicating satisfactory to good levels of internal consistency.
For the overall PADAA, an internal consistency coefficient of α = 0.91 is reported, while the reported test–retest reliability is 0.84.
Applications
The PADAA-19 can be used in research contexts concerned with attitudes toward cultural diversity and cultural pluralism. It may be particularly relevant in educational, social, and multicultural settings where researchers seek to systematically examine individuals’ perceptions and attitudes toward cultural differences.
The instrument can also support comparisons of attitudes across different groups and contribute to research examining how individuals respond to culturally diverse environments.
