Description of the Questionnaire

The NEO-PI-3 is the revised version of the NEO-PI-R and is used to assess personality based on the Five-Factor Model (Big Five): Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness to Experience, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness. It consists of 240 statements and 30 subscales (facets), and it is intended for use with adolescents and adults over the age of 12. Responses are given on a five-point Likert scale, ranging from “strongly disagree” to “strongly agree.”

Objective

The main objective of the study was to standardize and psychometrically evaluate the Greek translation of the NEO-PI-3 in the general Greek population. The aim was to determine whether the Greek version of the instrument maintains the same levels of reliability and validity as the original version, so that it can be used for research and clinical purposes in Greece.

Data Analysis and Usage

The study was conducted with a sample of 734 individuals from the Greek population, with a mean age of 40.8 years and a gender ratio of 59.4% female and 40.6% male. Descriptive statistics, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), Procrustes rotation, and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were used. Pearson correlations were applied to assess inter-factor relationships, and demographic differences were analyzed using ANOVA. Results showed that most subscales demonstrated acceptable reliability levels (above 0.60), while the five main factors presented satisfactory internal consistency and correlations, comparable to the American normative version of the tool.

Standardization

The standardization of the Greek version of the NEO-PI-3 was based on the Procrustes rotation method and showed high levels of similarity to the original American structure. Congruence coefficients ranged between 0.94 and 0.97 for the five major factors, indicating sufficient cross-cultural validity. Although the confirmatory factor analysis did not achieve perfect fit, the results confirmed the presence of the five-factor structure.
