Questionnaire Description
The Institutional Life Evaluation Scale (K.E.I.Z.) is an assessment tool designed to evaluate nine key areas of functioning in a psychiatric institution, with its initial application at the Leros Psychiatric Hospital. The evaluation is carried out by an observer during their visit to a ward of the institution and is based on direct observation. The nine dimensions included in the tool are: the general appearance of the ward/common areas, adequacy of clothing, quality of sleep/bed, quality of food, hours of occupational activity, hygiene facilities, outdoor space of the ward, quality of staff-patient relationships, and cleanliness of the premises. The assessment reflects the situation at a specific point in time and is based on the observation of the environment and interactions.
Data Analysis and Use
K.E.I.Z. is used as a qualitative and quantitative tool for recording institutional life, facilitating the evaluation of reforms, interventions, or changes within institutional settings. It can be used to compare different units or to monitor the progress of a single unit over time, serving as a valuable documentation tool in both research and clinical contexts.
Objective
The objective of the K.E.I.Z. is the systematic evaluation of the quality of life of residents in psychiatric institutions by recording essential aspects of their daily lives. Although it was originally designed for the Leros Psychiatric Hospital, it can also be applied to other large psychiatric institutions, contributing to the improvement of patient care and living conditions.
Scoring
Each dimension is rated on a scale from 1 to 3, with the total score ranging from 9 to 27. Total scores are categorized dichotomously, with scores between 9 and 18 indicating low satisfaction, and scores between 19 and 27 indicating moderate to high satisfaction. The reliability of the tool was tested through inter-rater agreement between two independent observers across 25 randomly selected wards at the Leros Psychiatric Hospital in 1989. The K agreement coefficient ranged between 0.90 and 0.95, indicating high reliability.
