Analysis
The Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS-5) is a psychometric tool designed to assess Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) according to the DSM-5 criteria. It includes questions that evaluate the severity and frequency of PTSD symptoms through a semi-structured interview. The analysis of the CAPS-5 involves identifying and evaluating the 20 core PTSD symptoms, as defined by the DSM-5, which are categorized into four central groups: re-experiencing, avoidance, negative alterations in mood and cognition, and hyperarousal.
Purpose
The primary purpose of CAPS-5 is to provide a reliable and valid method for assessing PTSD for clinical diagnosis, research, and monitoring the course of treatment. The tool allows clinicians to accurately identify PTSD symptoms, assess their intensity and duration, and differentiate PTSD from other disorders. Through CAPS-5, clinicians can create a comprehensive clinical profile of the patient, which is essential for designing and implementing personalized therapeutic plans.
Scoring
The scoring of CAPS-5 is based on a five-point Likert scale for each symptom, ranging from 0 (not present) to 4 (extremely present). Each symptom is scored on both frequency and intensity, and the two scores are combined to provide an overall rating for each symptom. The total score, obtained by summing the individual symptom scores, can be used to determine the severity of PTSD. The standardization and validity of CAPS-5 have been confirmed through numerous studies, making it one of the most reliable tools for PTSD assessment.
