Description
The Levenson IPC Scale (LIS-24) is a psychometric instrument designed to assess individuals’ beliefs regarding the degree of control they perceive over events and outcomes in their lives. Objective
The primary objective of the LIS-24 is to examine how individuals perceive the sources of control over events and outcomes in their lives.
Through its three dimensions, the instrument makes it possible to investigate whether individuals predominantly believe that outcomes depend on their own behavior and decisions, on the influence of powerful others, or on chance and unpredictable circumstances.
The scale can therefore be used to explore individual differences in perceived personal control and their associations with psychological, behavioral, social, educational, and other relevant variables.
Data Analysis and Use
Analysis of data obtained from the Levenson IPC Scale is generally conducted separately for each of its three dimensions rather than through a single overall score.
Scoring: Responses to the 24 items are used to calculate separate scores for the Internality, Powerful Others, and Chance dimensions. Higher scores on each dimension indicate stronger endorsement of the corresponding locus-of-control orientation.
Descriptive Statistics: Means, standard deviations, medians, ranges, and frequency distributions can be calculated for each subscale to provide an overview of locus-of-control characteristics within the study population.

Scoring and Interpretation
The LIS-24 consists of three eight-item subscales corresponding to Internality, Powerful Others, and Chance.
In the original scoring format, respondents indicate their degree of agreement or disagreement using response values ranging from −3 to +3, without a neutral zero response.
A separate score is calculated for each of the three dimensions. Under the original scoring procedure, a constant of 24 points is added to the sum of the eight responses within each subscale, resulting in scores ranging from 0 to 48 for each dimension.
A higher Internality (I) score indicates a stronger belief that personal actions, decisions, abilities, and effort influence life outcomes.
A higher Powerful Others (P) score indicates a stronger belief that outcomes are influenced or controlled by powerful or influential other people.
A higher Chance (C) score reflects a stronger tendency to attribute outcomes to chance, luck, fate, or unpredictable external circumstances.
Interpretation should preferably focus on the individual’s profile across the three dimensions, rather than relying on arbitrary universal cut-off points. Scores should also be interpreted with consideration of the characteristics of the population, research design, and available normative or comparative data.
Psychometric Evaluation and Adaptation
When the LIS-24 is administered to different populations, its psychometric properties should be evaluated within the relevant research context.
Psychometric assessment may include examination of internal consistency, stability over time, construct validity, convergent and discriminant validity, and the underlying factor structure of the instrument.
