Description

The University of Rhode Island Change Assessment Scale – Alcohol Version (URICASAV-28) is a psychometric instrument designed to assess an individual’s readiness to change alcohol-related behavior. The scale consists of 28 items and is based on the Transtheoretical Model of Change.

Dimensions

The scale assesses four main stages of change:

  • Precontemplation
  • Contemplation
  • Action
  • Maintenance

Purpose and Use

The URICASAV-28 is used to assess motivation and readiness for change among individuals with problematic alcohol use. Subscale scores can help identify the predominant stage of change and support the adaptation of counseling or therapeutic interventions to the individual’s needs.

Scoring

Scores are calculated separately for each stage of change. A broader readiness-to-change score may also be derived by combining selected subscale scores.
