Description

The Learning Skills and Weaknesses Detection Software (LAMDA) is a specialized computerized assessment tool designed for the automated identification of potential learning difficulties in children and adolescents. The software includes two sets of selected exercises presented through a computer interface, where students respond using only the mouse.

LAMDA evaluates a broad range of cognitive and learning-related skills, including phonological and semantic processing, reading and comprehension abilities, auditory and visual memory, visual perception, verbal fluency, and the retention of verbal and visual information. The total administration time is approximately 40 minutes, and the tool is designed for students from the 2nd grade of primary school to the 2nd grade of junior high school.

Objective

The main objective of LAMDA is the early and automated detection of possible learning difficulties in preschool and school-aged children.

The tool aims to support general education by identifying students who may require additional educational support or referral for specialized assessment. It can be used in educational settings, assessment centers, medical-pedagogical services, and by professionals such as special education teachers and psychologists.

LAMDA contributes to the creation of an individualized learning profile, helping professionals understand students’ strengths and weaknesses and design appropriate educational interventions.

Structure and Content

LAMDA consists of computerized tasks that assess multiple domains associated with learning performance. These domains include:

phonological processing abilities,

semantic processing,

language comprehension,

auditory memory,

visual memory,

visual perception,

verbal fluency,

and the ability to retain verbal and visual information.

The computerized format allows standardized administration and automatic recording of student performance, reducing examiner-related variability.

Scoring and Data Analysis

Student performance is automatically recorded by the software and interpreted according to standardized performance levels. The results are categorized using reference ranges such as:

10,
10–25,
25–50,
and above 50.

The software generates an individual report containing quantitative performance results, a description of the student’s learning profile, and recommendations for further assessment or educational support.

LAMDA data can be used in educational research, screening procedures, diagnostic assessment contexts, and evaluation of intervention programs.

Standardization and Psychometric Properties

LAMDA was standardized on a sample of 1,322 students from the 2nd grade of primary school to the 2nd grade of junior high school. The standardization sample included students from 73 primary schools and 31 junior high schools located in Attica, Thessaloniki, Heraklion, Rethymno, Larissa, and Magnesia.

The psychometric evaluation examined internal consistency, test–retest reliability, and response speed. The results demonstrated satisfactory reliability, with average test–retest reliability approximately r = 0.60 (Pearson correlation) and internal consistency values approximately Cronbach’s α = 0.70 for accuracy measures and α = 0.80 for speed measures.

These findings support the suitability of LAMDA as a screening tool for identifying learning difficulties in different educational and social contexts.
