Brief Description

The Sex Role Orientation – Short Form (SRO-SF-30) is a self-report questionnaire adapted from the full Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI). It evaluates personality traits associated with masculinity and femininity. Participants indicate the extent to which each trait represents them. The scale distinguishes between two independent dimensions—masculinity and femininity—allowing individuals to be classified as masculine, feminine, androgynous, or undifferentiated.

Purpose

The primary aim of the scale is to study gender-related traits by capturing how individuals perceive and adopt traditionally masculine or feminine characteristics, regardless of their biological sex.

Scoring Method

Participants rate 20 traits on a 7-point Likert scale (1 = not at all true of me to 7 = very true of me). The mean score is calculated for each subscale (masculinity and femininity). Individuals with high scores on both dimensions are classified as androgynous; those with low scores on both are undifferentiated. A high score on only one dimension results in classification as either masculine or feminine.

Validity

The scale’s validity is supported by the absence of a significant correlation between the two dimensions, confirming that they assess distinct personality traits.

Reliability

The scale demonstrates high reliability, with Cronbach’s alpha exceeding 0.80, indicating strong internal consistency and measurement stability.

Data Analysis and Use

The Greek adaptation of the SRO-SF-30 was tested on a sample of 204 adults, with a mean age of 34.6 years. The data analysis is based on the mean scores of the two dimensions and enables exploration of gender, role identity, and gender orientation.
