Family Environment Scale (FES-90)

Overview

The Family Environment Scale (FES-90) is a comprehensive self-report psychometric instrument developed by Rudolf H. Moos and Bernice S. Moos (1981) to assess individuals’ perceptions of the social, emotional, and organizational characteristics of the family environment. Recognized as one of the most influential instruments in family assessment, the FES-90 evaluates the interpersonal climate within the family by examining patterns of communication, cohesion, conflict, personal development, and family organization. Grounded in social ecology and family systems theory, the scale conceptualizes the family as an interactive environment that significantly influences psychological development, emotional adjustment, academic achievement, and overall well-being. The FES-90 has been extensively applied in psychology, psychiatry, education, family therapy, and public health, and has been translated and validated in numerous cultural contexts, including Greece.

Objective

The primary objective of the Family Environment Scale (FES-90) is to provide a multidimensional assessment of individuals’ perceptions of their family environment, enabling researchers and clinicians to evaluate the quality of family relationships, opportunities for personal development, and the structural characteristics that shape everyday family life.

More specifically, the FES-90 is designed to:

  • Assess the interpersonal climate within the family.
  • Evaluate family cohesion, communication, support, and conflict.
  • Measure dimensions related to personal growth and autonomy.
  • Examine family organization, rules, and value systems.
  • Support research investigating the influence of family climate on psychological adjustment, mental health, educational outcomes, and family functioning.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of family-centered therapeutic and educational interventions.

Scale Structure

The Family Environment Scale (FES-90) consists of 90 self-report items organized into 10 subscales, which are grouped into three higher-order dimensions. Respondents evaluate statements describing their family environment using a 4-point Likert response scale, ranging from Strongly Agree to Strongly Disagree.

The instrument has three parallel forms:

  • Real Form, assessing perceptions of the current family environment.
  • Ideal Form, evaluating the family environment respondents would ideally like to experience.
  • Expected Form, measuring expectations regarding the future family environment.

The Greek adaptation uses only the Real Form.

Applications

The Family Environment Scale is extensively used in clinical psychology, family therapy, psychiatry, counseling, developmental psychology, educational psychology, nursing, social work, and public health research. It is appropriate for adolescents and adults and has been widely employed in both clinical and non-clinical populations.

The FES-90 has been applied to investigate the relationships between family climate and numerous psychosocial outcomes, including psychological well-being, depression, anxiety, resilience, self-esteem, stress, academic achievement, behavioral adjustment, parenting practices, substance use, chronic illness adaptation, and family functioning. In clinical settings, the instrument assists professionals in identifying dysfunctional family interaction patterns and monitoring changes following family-based interventions, psychotherapy, or psychoeducational programs. In educational research, it has been particularly useful for examining the influence of family climate on students’ academic performance, motivation, and emotional development.

Scoring and Psychometric Evaluation

Each item is scored using a 4-point Likert response scale, and responses are aggregated to calculate mean scores for each of the ten subscales. These subscale scores provide a multidimensional profile of the respondent’s perceived family environment, allowing interpretation across the three broader dimensions of Relationships, Personal Growth, and System Maintenance.

Psychometric evaluation of the FES-90 includes analyses of internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha), construct validity, criterion validity, factor analysis, and inter-subscale correlations. In the original validation conducted by Moos and Moos (1981) with 1,067 participants, Cronbach’s alpha coefficients ranged from 0.61 to 0.78, indicating acceptable internal consistency across the subscales. In the Greek adaptation, Pearson correlation coefficients among the ten subscales ranged from 0.007 to 0.57, with 35 of the 45 calculated correlations reaching statistical significance, supporting the theoretical structure of the instrument. Although some Greek subscales demonstrated relatively lower reliability, including Expressiveness (α = 0.40) and Achievement Orientation (α = 0.45), the overall psychometric performance supports the use of the FES-90 for both research and clinical assessment.

Interpretation

Higher scores on each FES-90 subscale indicate stronger expression of the corresponding family characteristic. For example, higher Cohesion scores reflect stronger emotional bonding among family members, whereas higher Conflict scores indicate greater interpersonal tension and disagreement. Elevated scores on the Personal Growth dimensions suggest that the family promotes autonomy, achievement, intellectual development, and recreational involvement, while higher Organization and Control scores reflect greater structure, order, and regulation within family life.

Because the FES-90 evaluates multiple dimensions simultaneously, interpretation should focus on the overall family profile rather than isolated subscale scores. The instrument enables clinicians and researchers to identify both protective family characteristics and areas of dysfunction, thereby facilitating individualized intervention planning, family counseling, and outcome evaluation.
