Description
The Measuring Work and Family Engagement (MWFE) framework is designed to assess individuals’ active participation and psychological and emotional investment in two major domains of adult life: work and family.
Engagement reflects the extent to which individuals invest their energy, time, attention, and personal resources in their different social roles. Within this framework, dimensions such as Vigor, Dedication, and Absorption can be considered to describe different aspects of active involvement and commitment in work and family life.
Objective
The primary objective of the MWFE is to explore how individuals experience and manage their work and family roles simultaneously. Its assessment can contribute to a better understanding of the relationships between work engagement, family engagement, personal well-being, and work–family balance.
It can also support the investigation of whether active engagement in one life domain facilitates or competes with engagement in another, providing valuable insight into the dynamic interaction between professional and family responsibilities.
Data Analysis and Use
Data derived from the MWFE can be used in research within organizational psychology, human resource management, occupational well-being, and work–family studies.
Statistical analysis may include descriptive statistics, internal consistency and reliability analysis, examination of the underlying factor structure, correlation analysis, and regression models. MWFE dimensions may also be examined in relation to variables such as job satisfaction, occupational burnout, family satisfaction, perceived stress, psychological well-being, and quality of life.
Researchers may additionally compare engagement levels across demographic or occupational groups and employ multivariate statistical techniques to identify factors associated with higher levels of work or family engagement.
Scoring
Assessment is conducted using a Likert-type response scale, through which participants indicate their level of agreement with, or the frequency of, experiences associated with engagement in work and family roles.
The examination of individual and dimensional scores can provide a more comprehensive profile of how strongly a person engages in each domain. The precise scoring and interpretation procedure should follow the specifications of the particular version of the instrument used in the study.
Applications
The MWFE can be applied in academic and applied research investigating work engagement, family engagement, work–family balance, organizational behavior, employee well-being, and the interaction between professional and personal life.
The simultaneous examination of work and family engagement is particularly relevant in contemporary working environments, where remote work, hybrid employment models, flexible working arrangements, and increased connectivity have made the boundaries between professional and family life increasingly dynamic.
Understanding engagement across both domains can contribute to the development of organizational policies and interventions aimed at promoting employee well-being, sustainable performance, and a healthier integration of professional and family responsibilities.
