Purpose

The test aims to estimate the size of the receptive vocabulary of children aged 5.5 to 6.5 years, both overall and by grammatical category.

Scoring

Following research practices in this field from the United States, a tool was developed containing 465 Modern Greek words. These words were statistically selected to be representative from the Dictionary of Standard Modern Greek (Triantafyllidis Foundation, 1998) and were ordered by increasing difficulty based on preschool children’s comprehension.

The comprehension of the first 236 words was assessed in pilot studies using three criteria:
The child defines the word.
The child uses the word in a sentence.
The child answers a multiple-choice question about the word’s definition.
Children’s responses were recorded, and correct answers were used to calculate the receptive vocabulary, meaning the number of words the child understands.
For every correct answer—regardless of the criterion used—the child received 1 point.
The total score on the questionnaire indicates the number of words understood by the child.

Statistical Analysis

No standardized scores were derived.
The research sample consisted of 270 children aged 5.5 to 6.5 years, who were enrolled during the 2000–01 school year in public kindergartens in the regions of Rethymno and Chania (Crete, Greece).
