Description

The Patient Specific Functional Scale (PSFS) is a patient-reported outcome measure designed to evaluate functional ability based on the individual’s own perception of important daily activities. The scale focuses on activities that patients consider meaningful and that may be affected by their current health condition.

The PSFS was developed by Nicholas E. Stucki and Frank P. Verbrugge and is widely used for monitoring treatment progress and assessing functional status across different clinical conditions.

Objective

The primary objective of the PSFS is to provide an individualized assessment of patient functioning by taking into account activities that are personally important to each individual.

The instrument allows patients to identify their own priorities regarding everyday activities and evaluate how their health condition affects their ability to perform these activities.

Structure and Content

The PSFS is a personalized assessment tool in which the patient identifies activities that are difficult to perform due to their current condition.

Typically, the patient selects three activities that are important in their daily life and affected by their health problem.

These activities may relate to mobility, self-care, work, leisure, or other personally meaningful functional tasks.

Scoring Method

After selecting the activities, the patient rates their ability to perform each activity using a Likert-type scale, usually ranging from 0 to 10.

The total PSFS score is calculated as the mean score of the ratings given for the selected activities.

Higher scores indicate better perceived functional ability, whereas lower scores indicate greater functional limitations.

Data Analysis and Use

The PSFS data can be analysed through descriptive statistics, evaluation of changes over time, and comparison of functional outcomes before and after interventions.

The scale is particularly useful for:

monitoring rehabilitation progress,

evaluating treatment effectiveness,

assessing musculoskeletal disorders,

and measuring patient-centred functional outcomes.

Because activities are selected individually by each patient, the PSFS provides information that complements standardized clinical measures.

Validity and Reliability

The PSFS has been investigated in different clinical populations, demonstrating satisfactory reliability and validity for assessing patient-specific functional limitations.

Research has supported its use in individuals with musculoskeletal conditions, including low back pain, knee osteoarthritis, and other rehabilitation-related conditions.
