Description

The Semantic Verbal Learning Test [VLT-16] is a measure of verbal learning and memory, focusing on the acquisition, recall, and recognition of words organized into semantic categories. The test allows the learning process to be examined across repeated presentations and different stages of recall.

Purpose

The main purpose of the VLT-16 is to assess verbal learning ability, immediate recall, delayed recall, recognition, and the overall learning curve. It also provides information about the way individuals organize verbal material semantically and respond to interference.

Structure and Administration

The test includes a list of 16 words or objects belonging to specific semantic categories. Participants are asked to learn the items through repeated presentations and subsequently perform immediate recall, recall after a short delay and interference, and recall after a longer delay.

A recognition task is also included, in which participants are required to identify the original words among similar or unrelated alternatives. The Greek adaptation was inspired by the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) and includes two corresponding forms, allowing repeated assessment of the same individual at different time points.

Validity and Reliability

The VLT-16 demonstrates strong conceptual validity as a measure of verbal learning and memory because it incorporates distinct stages of acquisition, immediate and delayed recall, and recognition. Its structure also allows the assessment of semantic organization and the effects of interference.

Its reliability has been examined through studies involving different populations, including illiterate adults. Repeated administrations and the availability of alternative forms may support the systematic monitoring of changes in verbal memory performance over time.

Data Analysis and Use

Analysis is primarily based on the number of words recalled at each stage of the test and on recognition performance. Additional indices may assess semantic clustering, resistance to interference, use of cues, and retention of learned material over time.

The VLT-16 can be used in research and clinical settings, particularly when a detailed assessment of verbal memory, learning processes, and recall strategies is required.
