International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ)
Description
The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) is one of the most widely used standardized self-report instruments for assessing physical activity and sedentary behavior in adult populations. Developed through an international collaborative research initiative, the IPAQ provides a reliable and valid method for evaluating habitual physical activity across diverse countries, cultures, and population groups, making it one of the most frequently employed tools in epidemiological, clinical, and public health research.
The questionnaire is available in both Short Form (IPAQ-SF) and Long Form (IPAQ-LF) versions. It assesses the frequency, duration, and intensity of physical activity performed during the previous seven days across multiple domains of daily life, including occupational activities, transportation, household tasks, and leisure-time exercise. Additionally, the IPAQ measures time spent sitting, providing an estimate of sedentary behavior, an important independent risk factor for numerous chronic diseases.
The IPAQ has been translated and validated in numerous languages and is extensively used in population surveillance, clinical practice, sports science, rehabilitation, preventive medicine, and health promotion programs. Analysis of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) involves calculating the frequency, duration, and intensity of reported physical activities, which are subsequently converted into Metabolic Equivalent Task minutes per week (MET-min/week) according to the official IPAQ scoring protocol.
The instrument evaluates three primary categories of physical activity:
- vigorous-intensity physical activity,
- moderate-intensity physical activity, and
- walking.
It also measures daily sitting time, providing valuable information about sedentary behavior and overall movement patterns.
IPAQ data can be analyzed using continuous MET scores or by classifying participants into Low, Moderate, or High physical activity categories based on internationally established scoring criteria.

Scoring
The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) is scored according to the official IPAQ scoring guidelines by combining the frequency (days per week) and duration (minutes per day) of walking, moderate-intensity activities, and vigorous-intensity activities performed during the previous seven days.
Each activity is assigned a standardized MET value, and total physical activity is expressed as MET-minutes per week (MET-min/week). Based on the calculated scores, participants are classified into one of three internationally recognized physical activity levels:
- Low Physical Activity
- Moderate Physical Activity
- High Physical Activity
In addition to physical activity levels, the questionnaire records daily sitting time, allowing researchers to evaluate sedentary behavior independently of overall physical activity. Higher MET scores indicate greater overall physical activity, whereas prolonged sitting time may reflect increased sedentary behavior and associated health risks.
